Testing the lenses

I did this research to test out the different lenses and effects on the camera. From this I found out about cinemode which makes the footage a lot more detailed, however makes the colours a lot more dull. I then, in the end few shots, colour corrected some of the cinemode footage just to get a feel on how it’ll be if I shot in cinemode. This helped me when doing the final edit because I had an idea on how to colour correct things effectively and to bring out the colours I to create a higher contrast. I think it’s going to be a good idea to use cinemode on this project because then I can get as much detail as possible in my shots, and then get the contrast high when colour correcting it in the edit. I can also use the normal cinemode footage as the start of the film for the low contrast footage. I also found out that the 55mm lens has a better aperture than the 18-50mm, so if I’m doing anything that I’m wanting to blur the background or foreground out, I should use the 55mm lens (or 75-300mm as they’re both quite good for it). To show Dylans reaction to the beauty of the Peak District I think it’ll be good to use the 55mm lens because I can get a good aperture to blur the background out and focus it more on Dylans face, but also have the bright colours and basics of the beautiful background behind. I’ll have to use the 75-300mm lens for the full focus of Dylan walking away from his phone because he will be walking far away from the camera and I’ll need the bigger lens. The 75-300mm lens is also really good because it can make something, a corridor for instance, look a lot longer than it is and make the Peak District look a lot more extreme and adventurous than it may be. When doing the production, this research will help me a lot because I will know exactly which lens is good for what and how I can use their qualities effectively to produce the best shots I can.

I did this target audience to try and find out the cinematography and editing people get most inspired by, since the project I’m working on has an aim of inspiring people to do walk in the Peak District. I started the survey off with the a question asking if people actually get inspired by videos, to see how hard I’m going to have to work to make it inspiring. Most people said yes, so that means that I’m not going to have to try that hard to get people inspired from the video. I then asked what editing they find the most inspiring, most people said rhythmic, and the least people said fast. This is good because at the start of the video, I’m going to be using fast editing, however I’m not trying to inspire people at the start of the video, it’s just to emphasise Dylan’s boring repetitive life. Screen Shot 2016-04-29 at 09.20.22.pngWhen I asked people which photo they found the most inspiring, to get an idea of what contrast inspires them the most, most people picked this photo. This tells me that most people get inspired by high contrasted images/cinematography, which is what I’m going to be using on the footage of Dylan on Mam Tor, finally experiencing life. I then asked what colours they found the most inspiring, so that when I’m editing I know which colours to bring out the most. The most inspiring one they picked was blue, and then white, green, purple and yellow. This is good because in the Peak District there will be a lot of blue in the sky, white in the clouds, and green in the grass and yellow in the sun. In addition, I will try my hardest to find a purple flower of some sort to maximise the potential of inspiration. In my editing I know that I need to bring these colours out the most when I’m colour correcting, to make the audience as inspired as possible. Overall, I have found from doing this survey that the target audience agree with the initial views I have for the video in cases of inspiration and freedom symbolisations in cinematography. Despite the fact that my survey was only four questions long, I now know that by using high contrasted shots and rhythmic editing I will capture the audience.

I did a survey so that once people have watched our first draft of the film, they can tell us what went well and what didn’t. This will help us when do the final tweaks of the film. I also did this research to add to the section in the secondary research that says how a film flopped or why it was successful, because then I can find out whether ours was a flop or not. Firstly, the fact that everyone voted yes for it hitting the target audience is a great start, since thats one of the reasons why John Carter flopped which means ours is swerving more to the success side of the scale. The positive feedback goes against why John Carter flopped, since people said that it was interesting and has a good meaning behind it. The only two things people have found wrong with it is the saturation, which is my area on the project. However, these don’t tie in with why John Carter was a flop which is good! They said that it inspired them to go to the Peak District, which was the aim of the film in the first place. However, 20% said that the colouring ‘sort of’ works, which is always an improvement that I’m going to be working on and I’ll write about in my evaluation. And finally, most people ranked it 4/5 or 5/5 which is brilliant!
